Summary
Climate change is expected to have a profound and transformative impact on our lives, livelihoods, culture, and public health. this report is called a shared future in recognition of the fact that each of us will be impacted by climate change, and by our efforts to adapt to it – possibly in more fundamental ways than by any other challenge to have faced modern society to date. This report offers governing authorities, central and local agencies, and practitioners involved in climate adaptation, important principles, tools, and case studies on meaningful community engagement in adaptation. Communities need the space and time to engage with the issues, grasp the science, and contribute to decision making from a position of knowledge. Decision makers should expect to transition from a one-off model of ‘informing’ or ‘consulting’ on specific projects, towards developing long-term partnerships with communities, with decision making as an iterative process.
