Summary
The work in this project suggests there is considerable potential to gradually transition existing exotic buffer zones to native coastal forest over many decades. While further work is required to refine transition methods, the work conducted during this short project suggests the following factors are likely to be critical in establishment of native coastal forest buffers on exposed nearshore dunes of the upper North Island. * Capitalising on the benefits of existing pine shelter * Species selection * Planting microclimate * Management of browsing by animal pests * Large-scale planting * Seed planting
