Summary
The Western Bay of Plenty District Council has commissioned Tonkin & Taylor Ltd to undertake a review of the Primary and Secondary Risk Coastal Protection Areas currently implemented in the Western Bay of Plenty District Plan for both Waihi Beach and Pukehina. The Coastal Protection Areas represent properties susceptible to coastal hazard including both erosion and inundation. The Coastal Protection Areas were first introduced into the District Plan via the 1994 notification of the first Proposed District Plan which became Operative in 2002. The delineation of the Coastal Protection Areas was based on a technical report prepared for Council by Professor Terry Healy in 1993 (Healy, 1993). Council required the Coastal Protection Areas to be re-assessed in line with the current state of scientific knowledge, relevant legislation and best practice guidelines.
