Summary
Daisy Scott has requested advice on methods for establishing a sustainable resource of pingao fibre for weaving purposes. While pingao is one of the key native sand binders on our sand dunes, the species has become rare or been lost from many regions throughout the country. Restoration of pingao on dunes requires considerable management so it is suggested that as an interim measure, the planting of pingao in specially prepared sites landward of the beach could be used as a viable source of fibre for weaving. However, methods for establishment and ongoing management of pingao away from foredunes will require evaluation. As an extension of planting trials established in 2010 by the Onepu Charitable Trust, Environment Waikato and ERL, evaluating the early performance of a range of coastal native plants along the harbour margin near the Maketu Marae, Kawhia, ERL have agreed to supply a brief planting plan for the establishment of a pingao pilot planting trial to be established within the marae grounds.
