Summary
Waimakariri District Council (WDC) is undertaking a 10 yearly review of its operative District Plan as required under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). As part of this process, the Council is required to recognise and provide for the following matters of national importance under the RMA:  the protection of areas of significant indigenous vegetation and significant habitats of indigenous fauna. The Council is also required to control any actual or potential effects of the use, development, or protection of land to maintain indigenous biological diversity (RMA s31). Statutory duties in relation to significant indigenous vegetation and significant habitats of indigenous fauna have been defined in the Canterbury Regional Policy Statement. These must be given effect to in district plans.
