- The purpose of the Waikato Regional Coastal Plan (the plan) is to promote the sustainable management of the natural and physical resources of the Waikato coastal marine area (CMA). The plan sets out a framework for the integrated and sustainable management of natural and physical resources. It includes objectives, policies and rules to manage use and development activities within the CMA under the jurisdiction of the regional council. The plan is prepared in accordance with the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). It will assist the Waikato Regional Council in achieving the purpose of the RMA, which is the sustainable management of natural and physical resources. The plan has been prepared recognising and providing for the relationship of tangata whenua with their culture and traditions with ancestral lands, water, sites, wāhi tapu and other taonga. In both preparing and administering the plan, Waikato Regional Council is required to have particular regard to kaitiakitanga and take into account the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi), amongst other statutory requirements.
