Summary
In recent years the development of small, low-cost Earth observation satellites has led to the creation of constellations of satellites which now image the entire Earth’s surface at daily timescales, unlocking scales of enquiry that were previously inaccessible within coastal studies. Here we present details on the application of Planet satellite imagery to examine changes on the Whāingaroa Harbour ebb tidal delta in New Zealand. By accessing >120 cloud-free PlanetScope images we are able to time-average the image collection to differentiate between broken and unbroken water based on image tone. Using this approach we identify a range of sand bars and channels. Changes through time are then assessed to identify migration of the channel margin linear bars and the main channel. The approach we use is simple and with the growing constellations of commercial and government Earth observation satellites, has a range of potential applications within other coastal systems.
